WPC – Shadow (work)

For this week’s challenge – Shadow – You can completely change an image with a shadow. Whether you’re taking a selfie silhouette on the ground, capturing the lines and patterns on the walls while walking your city’s streets, or recording the subtle ways the light hits your subject’s face as she sits next to a window, these different types of shadows you see can add a complex, unexpected layer to your shot.

“If you can touch your shadow—within form—and do something out of your ordinary pattern, a great deal of energy will flow from it.” ~  Robert A. Johnson ~

This is one of my favorite books by Robert A. Johnson – American Jungian analyst and author.

Sometimes the shadows are long and entangled within us and we don’t even notice how they manifest themselves in our outer life. Once we acknowledge our shadow we become aware of how it affects our lives and from there we can either accept it as is or intentionally shift our direction. Just think of a negative thought that continuously pops in your mind: “I’m not good enough.” “I’m overweight.” “I can’t do that.” “I’m not smart enough.” and on and on as the shadow increases. What about shifting to “I don’t know how to do this now so I will practice until I do.” or “I’m not my ideal weight so I will take steps starting today to achieve the body and health I deserve.” “I can’t do this today so I will find a way to learn how.” Somewhere in the middle we are living and balancing our lives so why not proceed intentionally and enjoy the process. Don’t be afraid of the shadow.

“The message is unmistakable; our own healing proceeds from that overlap of what we call good and evil, light and dark. It is not that the light element alone does the healing; the place where light and dark begin to touch is where miracles arise. This middle place is a manorial.” ~ Robert A. Johnson ~

  4. Loved your photos but think I loved the accompanying narrative even more because there was lots of food for deep thought. Thanks for the most profound thought of all: “Don’t be afraid of the shadow.” Nice!
