Out of This World – WPC

This week, share a photo that takes a familiar scene — a place you frequent, a face you know well, an activity you engage in regularly — and makes it look and feel like something out of this world. Feel free to interpret the theme as loosely as you see fit. I look forward to seeing your photos!

Some of the photos I have taken over the years feel out of this world to me when I view them later in the day or even a week or so after snapping the shot. Hopefully you will feel the same way when you view the photos I have selected for this challenge. Of course, there will be more than one submission for this week as this is one of many favorite topics.

Can you see the face in the melting ice or in the curtain? The different worlds within the reflections in the windows and counter?

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ~Howard Thurman ~

Today, while passing through this beautiful day, pay attention to things that feel ‘out of this world.’ Are you open to ‘seeing’ your world through new eyes?

If you can begin to see and think differently about the world you live in, take time to notice the beauty in the midst of chaos, and find what makes you come alive – even in the ordinary – your world will change. You will change. There will be a shift  that will be noticeable to those around you. As you come ‘alive’ others will want to learn. For the sake of our children, for our society, and for future generations please come alive and participate in this world. We can all have a powerful effect on those around us, our society and our environment – today, tomorrow and in the future.

What can you do today to awaken, observe, and take action?

Decisions – Loneliness or Freedom? Choice is Yours

Finding joy and pleasure in your life – no matter your circumstances.

DSC_0438.jpg

With thoughts of freedom come choice. If you find yourself alone at the end of the day embrace your freedom – the world is an open book.

  • Turn off the television.
  • Pick up a book or magazine, grab a tea, light a candle and cuddle up in your favorite chair with a cozy blanket.
  • Grab some pens/paint/pencils and a blank page to draw, write, paint, create something new.
  • Take apart some old jewelry and create a new necklace or use the pieces for your painting
  • Open the refrigerator and pull out some vegetables to create a new dish. Pay attention to the colors, textures while creating. Maybe you will decide the carrots, beets, sweet potatoes are a beautiful color and you decide to use the color for a new painting or to die a piece of material.
  • Put on your favorite music and sing at the top of your lungs while you dance around your house
  • Pull out your camera and take photos of your food, shadows, lighting, items you are creating
  • If you have essential oils, create a new blend in a roller ball or a new blend for bath salts
  • Declutter – that is always a great way to release anything holding you back and making space for new experiences

Thinking about the cold nights of winter in New York State, many are not willing to go outside due to freezing temperatures, icy roads, or maybe you want to enjoy winter from within your home. People who live alone, or with others, many times don’t enjoy all seasons and many hibernate when possible during the cold months – why not find a way to enjoy every minute of life.

Find magic and beauty wherever you are.

DSC_1129.jpg

It is always present if you open yourself up to the everyday joy in life.

DSC_0397

When brave enough to venture outside, bundle up and get out there and enjoy nature. With enough clothing you will feel so refreshed when you return home. Then you can fill up the bathtub with your new bath salts and enjoy a nice relaxing bath while listening to some soothing music.

What is your choice when alone – Loneliness or freedom? We all need people in our lives yet finding peace in quiet solitude is a great way to explore your inner creative self.

Be Like A Tree – Overcoming Obstacles

For a tree to become tall it must grow tough roots among the rocks.

~ Friedrich Nietzsche ~

DSC_1328 (1)

Trees always amaze me. They can grow under any environmental conditions, overcome obstacles and find a way to survive.

When we look at trees we don’t criticize, condemn or complain about their shapes, the gnarly roots, the way roots grow over and around rocks or cling to the sides of mountains finding their way to support themselves. We don’t focus on their imperfections – we are generally impressed with the way they have overcome. We are in awe of their brilliance (many people I know feel this way).  Then why is it we don’t look a little closer at the people around us. We all have a story hidden within us. Sometimes that story is told to others through our face, body, health, financial situation . . . without any words. Just as the tree tells a story in its physical appearance.

“Rocks in my path? I keep them all, with them I shall build my own castle.” Neo Nox

We all have over come obstacles along our path in life, some easier than others, and yet in order to live we must all find a way. People live all over the world under some very harsh conditions and survive. We all are born under various circumstances – wealthy parents, poor parents, educated, no formal education, live in small mansions, inner city slumlord homes, rural trailers, homeless, raised by teen parents, adopted, fostered, wealthy neighborhoods, dangerous neighborhoods, healthy food choices, poor for choices, loved, neglected, abused . . . Yet most survive and continue to pursue a better way.

No matter your circumstances you have choices – especially those living in countries with public school, public services, public organizations, and people willing to listen and help. You have a choice to reach out and ask for help. Reach out and provide help – make another persons day a little brighter, allow another person to feel supported – be the rock.

This is why I love Life Coaching. Anyone can change their life and situation. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but with commitment and dedication we all can change our circumstances one step at a time, one day at a time. Just like these beautiful trees, we too can learn to survive and thrive using what we know, the resources available, and the support of those around us.

One person’s success may not look like success to another yet it doesn’t mean you aren’t successful. Success can only to be determined by your own personal opinion of what success means to you.

If you look at where you were last year, five years ago, ten years ago; or look at where your parents or grandparents were at your age you may just see success differently. Don’t look at what the media tells you is success through television programs, advertisements, or movies – that is not your reality. Base your success on how happy, joyful and content you are in the present moment. That is the true indicator.

Youth of a couple of decades ago would base their value on the popular kids in school. What made them popular? Those kids in school who allowed themselves to see other kids as ‘popular’ made them so. They wouldn’t have been popular if the other kids didn’t envy them. Today, with internet, cable television, reality TV shows, and such our youth are comparing themselves to a wider web. How can anyone compete with ‘reality’ television or the media telling them what is important? It is a lose, lose situation if one falls into this fake reality. Be the tree and stand strong, don’t let others determine your worth. Be unique and allow your imperfections to show without shame.

I see young families purchase a home and within a year they are disappointed in their purchase because someone they know has a larger home, bigger kitchen, pool, better neighborhood. There is no way to stay in this competitive lifestyle without losing your true spirit and life purpose. Getting back to nature and living a simple lifestyle brings more happiness, contentment, joy, and friendship. If you are always racing for what others have you will lose any sense in what you truly want for your own life. Who exactly are you competing with? As each tree is unique, we are too. There is no need to look like everyone else.

We are only competing with the person we were yesterday. That is the truth. Are you a better person today than you were yesterday? Are you a better neighbor? Friend? Are you a more loving and compassionate parent, sibling, child than you were yesterday? Are you kinder to yourself today than you were yesterday, last year, ten years ago?

That is the true indicator of your success. You have to live with yourself for your entire life – not with those on television, in advertisements, or anyone else. If you are not happy with yourself, you will never be happy with a different car, home, neighborhood, vacation, spouse . . .  Only measure your life by how you feel deep within. If you can peacefully sleep at night feeling secure that you did the best you could that day, that is a good indicator of your success.

Start today, be like the tree overcoming all obstacles to stand tall and be the best, healthiest tree you can be not worrying being held back because a rock is in the way. Go around, over, or under the obstacles and become a shining star, standing tall and be proud of yourself. Only you have to live with your inner thoughts – living in happiness, joy and contentment is a great success in life. All the money, cars, homes, vacations in the world will give you a fleeting feeling of happiness and success until you see someone else have newer, bigger, better. Learning to love your life – where you are at this moment striving to reach a state of happiness and contentment is the highest reward in life.

Finding the Still Point

Finding the still point between here and there can sometimes be difficult however it is a place where we all need to be in order to feel alive. This is the point between birth and death that most people rush through only to find at the end that they didn’t take time to breath and enjoy that place in between – that still point where sanity resides.

DSC_0144

“At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.” ~ T.S. Eliot ~

WPC – Details

For this week’s challenge, try to look past the big picture and take a more intimate approach. Zoom in on details in unexpected places — it can be something from the natural world, or it can be human-made. We’re excited to see what you find with your lens.

“The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life. “ ~ William Morris ~

“The details are not the details. They make the design.” ~ Charles Eames ~

Live in the moment. Pay attention to the details that make up the design of your life. What are you paying attention to the most? Is it the chatter in your own mind or the drama in your environment?

For today, take time to breath in the beauty around you. It’s every where. Not only in nature, look around your home. There are designs in the shadows dancing on the walls, floor and furniture, and on the ceiling from a candle or light. Looking at a marble, table setting, food, pets . . . Open your eyes and notice a new world. This world is peaceful, beautiful, loving and compassionate. If we begin with ourselves to see the world in a new light, then we will begin to share this with our family, neighbors, community and the world. Love and compassion spread like wildfire. It is after the fire is put out that people forget. Let’s not forget.

“Every man’s life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another.” ~ Ernest Hemingway ~

“Be the change you wish to see in the world” ~ Mahatma Gandhi ~

See beauty in everything and everyone. Sometimes it is hidden right in front of your eyes.

WPC – Look Up

For this week’s challenge, take a moment to look up. Whether it’s the fan above your head at work, your bedroom ceiling, or the night sky, what do you see? Is it familiar? Or does it show you a new perspective on your surroundings? Looking forward to the peeks into your worlds!

Look up or you will miss some of life’s beautiful gifts. Bubbles floating into the air, tree canopies, vibrant reds in autumn, birds in flight or flying in circles protecting their large nest hiding in the tree.

When sitting in a traffic jam or driving down the road are you focusing on what you are going to do once you arrive? Or, are you living in the moment paying attention to what is before you? Do you ever look up and notice the rainbow after a storm? The moon looking down in the daytime or filling the night sky?

I am always amazed to learn when people have become oblivious to their surroundings. When living in California I was always amazed at all of the flowers. They were every where. When driving in Irvine, Costa Mesa, Laguna – flowers of all colors and sizes. Walking into my shared office I told my coworker how lucky she was to have grown up where flowers grow year round. She said, “What flowers?” I shared where I saw the flowers and couldn’t believe she hadn’t noticed. The next day she came to the office and said that she had never noticed how many flowers there were. I bet she is still noticing those flowers years later. Sometimes, a visitor needs to refresh your senses to all the beauty and hidden treasures in your community. Tomorrow when you leave your house, pretend you are visiting the area for the first time. Maybe visit a local site that draws visitors or walk around your neighborhood as if for the first time. Then write down what you noticed that you had ignored or not noticed before. Walk slowly around you neighborhood with a baby or a dog. Both the baby and dog bring new things to your attention because they are living in the now and paying attention to everything in their environments. Have fun with this.

Have you ever noticed how often children look up to notice the world around them. My grandson was on guard while walking through the corn maze. My daughter held him as he looked up at the scary masked scarecrow. Once he noticed all the scary decorations hiding in the corn he was ready to leave. While sitting in the swing he would point up to show me the birds, leaves dancing in the breeze, and, most recently, sunsets. He loves to watch the sunset. My 9 month old grandson is always looking up because everything is above him. He loves to watch the fan spinning or the shadows dancing along the ceiling.

Be childlike, look up. Notice the world around you and live in the moment. Pay attention to the shadows on the ceiling, the rays of light shining through the clouds, or the leaves dancing in the breeze. Enjoy the different phases of the moon and its varying sizes and colors throughout the year. Look for the hidden birds nests, look up when under the tree canopies, and discover other treasures hidden right in front of your eyes.

May tomorrow bring you more joy, fun, and inspiration. Do yourself a favor and notice the beauty in nature and in your home. Learn to live mindfully. Look up, down, to your right and left. Pay attention to the things children are looking at. Get down low and look up without judgement. Look for a new perspective on your surroundings and notice the miracles that exist in your world. Stop the constant mind chatter. Learn to live in the now because that is all we have, might as well add some playful living into your daily life.

Transforming Lives One Day at a Time

DSC_0361.jpg
If you are ready to step into that river and transform your life, make a decision that today is the day!!

Mindful living and gratitude journals are not just something that I talk about, it is a daily part of my life now. Let me share how living this way has changed my life.

Two weeks ago I participated in a challenge to post 100 things that I am grateful for. Some people said it would take too much time, they needed the whole day to think of 100 things to be grateful for. It took me around 15 minutes. It didn’t take any time to think of things to be grateful for, just the writing it down took some time. Once started I could have continued on beyond the 100 things. This is due to my waking with gratitude every morning for almost a year now.

After that challenge, I decided once again to transform my life. I facilitated a Vision Board class at the library and the women who had participated two years prior brought their Vision Boards from the previous class to show how they had accomplished their visions. My boards (I have three) have visions of at what my life will look like in six months, a year, five years. A week ago Sunday I felt a little sadness floating over and around me. At the time I wasn’t sure why I was feeling that way however by the time my evening walk ended I was feeling great, like walking through a new door.

Tuesday morning I met with two women whom I thought were meeting with me to share our experiences with the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking course. My class was in 1985 with my sister. When we first stood up to introduce ourselves to the 42 other participants I had no voice, couldn’t even share my name. My sister stood and introduced me. During the weeks of training I began to speak and was able to give one and two minutes speeches. At the end I was nominated as the most changed over the course. From shy introvert, to someone who could give speeches in front of a class. The red face, racing heart, and embarrassment were no longer a part of my experience. Speed up to 2016, sitting in the coffee shop with these two women chatting and laughing as we learned of each other unaware of what was to transpire. The one woman, was the owner of the Dale Carnegie franchise, asked if I would like to join their team. A dream since 1985 just came to fruition. Starting in September I will join the Dale Carnegie team of motivational trainers. I prefer – inspirational leaders.

During the last two weeks I was approached by a coach from the Quantum Success Coaching Academy regarding this upcoming opportunity for coaching those suffering from PTSD. I missed two of the informational calls and then last Wednesday listened in and spoke with the woman from the Academy on a Zoom conference call. By Thursday my flight was booked and a roommate found for our Seattle, WA training.

Two major changes in one week and there is no looking back.

But wait, that isn’t the end. On my vision board there is a group of people with children in the woods. They are dressed in long flowing dresses, flowers in their hair, a bon fire, tables with candles, little twinkly lights. Saturday I was invited to a Summer Solstice party. I wore my dress that had been sitting in the closet for two years awaiting such a party. While walking along the trail in the woods it felt magical. I had no idea what to expect, they just said wear a dress if you would like.

When I saw the candles on the clothed tables, little girls in dresses with flowers in their hair, white clothes hanging between the trees lit by twinkling lights, it felt like I walked into my vision. Quite a magical week.

Now as I move forward to work with those suffering from PTSD – many who feel that there is no reason to move forward in life, those stuck in their minds due to a trauma that they can’t let go of  – another door is opening. This is a dream career – to guide them along the path of mindful living, helping them find the way to living full and productive lives. Prolympian Coaching will provide methods for ending the cycle of harm starting with the individual and working with families without blame or shame. What a wonderful opportunity to guide others along their path to freedom, joy, and hope for a better future. Once they enter in the new waters there will be no looking back, they will be changed forever. If you know anyone suffering from PTSD or are a coach looking to join a team please check out this website: http://prolympiancoaching.com

Life is something to be grateful for and guiding others along their path to love, joy, and living mindfully is where I have found myself. Stepping into the flowing river of change, I shall not look back and will continue to be at peace knowing that I am transforming lives along the way.

If you are interested in private coaching sessions, please complete the form below, leave a message, or email me at spiritofdragonflies@gmail.com. Life is a river and sometimes we have to flow around or over obstacles to get to the place we wish to be. When we decide today is the day, we open the door and transformation becomes possible. As Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” That will make all the difference.

Love and Light!

WPC – Pure

For this week’s challenge, share a photo of something pure — it can be a person, an object, or a moment. “Pure” can convey wholesomeness, something undiluted, or simplicity.

“We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.” ~ Buddha ~

It is true, our lives are a reflection of our thoughts. When we find peace and gratitude in our mind, our lives reflect the joy around us. If you can learn to slow down and take time to be grateful for all of your blessings, you will begin to see the world through a new lens.

Since adding in a few moments of gratitude to my morning routine it seems there is a peace that flows within and around me. Lying in bed a few minutes extra instead of jumping up and going through the motion of the morning has made quite a difference in my life. Before rising I give thanks to the gift of waking to a new day, to the sunshine filtering through the curtains and dancing on the wall, to the air that gives life, trees, my bed, my children and grandchildren and the countless other blessings. It doesn’t take any more time to get ready than if I jumped up and frantically moved through the morning routine. Even if you have a tragedy, illness, or unemployment – you still are blessed with life and the wonder that is before you, the resources available, friends, family, air, water, nature. . . Start small and more will come to you.

There is a pure joy that comes from a focus of gratitude for all of our blessings. It is like looking through the camera lens. First you have to become aware. Then slow down and focus. Patience is needed to find the purity of the world around you. Finding little things to be grateful for will open you to more things flowing into your life to be grateful for everyday. Your thoughts will begin to change as you focus on what is working well in your life and less on what is unwanted. This simple act has changed what I see and how I feel about myself and life.

The things that bring me the most pleasure in life are the purest and simplest things in life – nature and children.

“Grown men can learn from very little children for the hearts of little children are pure. Therefore, the Great Spirit may show to them many things which older people miss.” ~ Black Elk ~

Watching little children experience life allows us to remember – to see life through pure eyes once again. My grandsons always give me pleasure, especially in the pureness of their actions. My youngest grandson, Colt, is experiencing food for the first time. He took such pleasure in experiencing a strawberry. Pure innocence and joy. He smiles if you sing Wheel’s on the Bus. You can sing this ten times in a row and he never tires of hearing you sing – even if you can’t keep a tune. While at my son’s gallery opening, Colt discovered his reflection in the glass. When was the last time you found such pure joy seeing your own reflection. We can return to that joy whenever we decide it is time.

My two-year old grandson was captured in the photo above in his purely innocent act of worshipping the sun as he sat on a rock in La Jolla, CA. Notice the pure joy in his little face. Amazingly, we didn’t pose him. I turned around to find him looking up at the sun with arms wide open. Love these little boys! They bring pure joy to my heart.

What brings you pure joy? Have you tried to give gratitude for your life before rising in the morning? If not, I wish you would give it a try for a couple of weeks and let me know if you notice changes in your daily life.

Living In-Between Past and Future

Living in-between our past and future is where we can find our peace and love of life. This moment is all we have. This post is in the past as soon as it is written down. This means I should focus in the here and now. Hold this writing in a place of love and gratitude so as I send this out to the world beautiful energy is shared with all those reading.

When writing my story, I could focus on the drama of the past or fear I had of the future but that is no longer my story. My story has been rewritten and I am forever grateful to live lovingly in-between.

IMG_5600

What story are you writing about your life?

Every moment of your life is a blank slate. You can release, redefine, and refocus the story of your life at any moment. Are you ready to release the drama and focus on what isn’t working? You can redefine your life by deciding to shift and find ways to enjoy every moment. You can refocus on the things in your life that bring joy. How you ask?

  • Decide today is the day: Say out loud, “I have decided today is the day to create a new future.”
    • Just acknowledging that you are ready prepares the way
    • Action is needed – it’s not just the saying but by deciding on what steps to take
    • Take a small step or action every day – change your morning habits, your food choices, add in a daily walk or stretching, smile more, laugh a little more, do one thing a day to help you enjoy life more
  • Stop and visualize what life you want to live
    • You know what you don’t want – we all know when we aren’t comfortable with our lives and what we don’t want any more of – switch to focus on what you do want more of and put all of your energy there
  • Create a vision board, creative future box, gratitude journal, idea journal, script of your life
    • Watch for my video of creating a vision board in a future post
    • Find a small box, decorate it and write Creative Future Box
      • place items in your box that give you joy and love
    • Pick up a journal that brings joy and write down everything you are grateful for every morning or evening, write down ideas that come to you during the day (without judging), write a script of how you want to feel about your life

Remember, life is not a destination it is a journey. Everyday is part of that journey.

One of the most important new habits you can start is to learn to appreciate wherever you are today. There is always something in your life to appreciate. If you are alive and breathing, you can have gratitude. A gift someone gave you that brings you joy – appreciation. Food on your table – appreciation. Running water and clean drinking water – appreciation. If you have your health, employment, transportation — all things to appreciate. Start small and allow your appreciation to grow.

A gift you can give to yourself is to wake every morning and before getting out of bed take a few minutes, ten if possible but there is no actual amount of time needed, and think or say out loud all the things you are appreciative of or give gratitude for. This has changed my outlook on life and the day that is to unfold before me. We can always be grateful for all of our blessings in-between. That is in-between where we were and where we are going. If you are not appreciating and giving gratitude for where you are at any given moment, then how will we ever appreciate today, tomorrow or next year. You will have to remain in-between no matter where you are, there is nothing else.

It was the times in my life when I had gratitude for my blessings – children, warm clothing, warm home, food, car, employment – that no matter how little we had I always felt love and joy. I remember once when I didn’t really like my position, or company I was working for, but enjoyed the staff that I was supervising, the location, and hours. Focusing on my children, nature, health, education, and simple pleasures like hugs, laughter, playing games, picnics allowed me to remain in a good place. There were times when I focused on what I disliked and those days were long and hard. When I received notice that I was being laid off – remember I was a single Mom of three – I thanked my employer. Without any knowledge of how we were going to survive I was truly grateful for being laid off. I knew in that moment a door had opened and we would be fine. Not sure where that knowledge came from but in my heart I knew. That door opened so that I could attend college full-time. Seven years of study at the Community College and when that door closed another opened so that I could complete my Associates degree the next year. Was it easy – no. Was it worth it – Yes!

When I share with you strategies, techniques, processes, ideas – take what appeals to you and give it a try. It can’t hurt. I’m not saying to quit your job, change relationships, relocate – unless that is what you need to do. What will work is to learn to appreciate where you are because you are always in-between. That is where life is lived. Not in the future or clinging to the past. Release the past – it no longer has any control over you. Be grateful for those loved ones who have died but don’t allow yourself to give up on your own life. Be grateful that you had the time with them and send them love. If someone from the past angered you or did something to hurt you, release them by forgiving them with love and kindness. Then love yourself by living in the here and now. Learn how to be grateful for every moment of life – sometimes we have a bad day or bad week. Truthfully, when you learn how to live in daily gratitude those bad days become bad moments that you can easily put behind you.

Everyday will not be filled with laughter however everyday can be filled with peace and love. The only person who can control your thoughts, actions, and emotions is you. You can become drama proof because drama will no longer have a place in your life once you live in the in-between with gratitude.

I hope you have decided to try some of the ideas that were shared. They have helped me and many others on our life journey, I know they can help you as well. Please let me know if you try them and what shifts you make in your own in-between journey.

Love and Light!
