WPC – Rise/Set

For this week’s photo challenge, share your favorite photos of a sunrise or a sunset. If you’re an early bird, try to capture what dawn means to you. Is it a symbol of hope? A reminder to get going? Do you have any special early morning rituals that you do as the sun rises in the sky?

For night owls, share a snapshot of the day coming to an end. Show off the vibrant colors of sunset and the peaceful calm as the moon rises or any twilight rituals you may have. Get creative and show us the sun in all of her fiery glory.

I am a night owl and love watching the sky fill with vibrant colors as the sun sets over the horizon. Sometimes the night sky looks as if it is on fire and other times it sets slowly filtering rays of light through clouds and trees. There are never two sunsets that are exactly the same so one never gets bored watching this amazing natural event. Every night when the sun sets it reminds me of the fragility of life and to always end the day in gratitude for all of our natural blessings.

Perfect happiness is a beautiful sunset, the giggle of a grandchild, the first snowfall. It’s the little things that make happy moments, not the grand events. Joy comes in sips, not gulps. ~ Sharon Draper ~

When in California a favorite activity to experience with my grandson is watching the sunset. It is a wonderful experience and one that he enjoys as well even at the age of 4.

When I lived in California, after work I would sit on a bench south of Laguna at a beautiful location called Treasure Island. Many people would visit the same location to witness the sunset. We would sit quietly waiting patiently for the sun slowly slip beyond the horizon. Once it made it’s decent, we would clap and enjoy the moment. Some would get up and leave as soon as the thin line along the horizon disappeared others, like myself, would sit and wait until darkness filled the night sky and then we would slowly make our way back to our cars.

Sitting with strangers enjoying the same natural event was quite moving. It cost nothing and actually gave more enjoyment than any expensive amusement park. No one had to say a word, when eyes met we communicated at a deeper level as we shared the same life experience. I can still feel the loving compassion and joy.

My grandson is naturally drawn to sunsets. When he was two sitting at dinner with his parents he said, “Look at the beautiful sunset.” My daughter and her husband looked out and had to agree – it was amazing. Sometimes in our busy lives we ignore the natural pleasures we are blessed with daily. Children can help us slow down and open our eyes to ‘see’ our world anew and become grateful for those daily blessings.

WPC – Textures

Photography is a primarily visual medium, but we can experience it with more than one sense. This week, focus on the tactile element of the objects you shoot, whether it’s one distinct quality — softness, smoothness, graininess, or any other texture you find interesting — or a combination of several within one frame.

“I long for the woods, to feel the songs of my skin, and the textures of on my lips as I kneel to kiss Mother Gaia.” ~ Dakota Earth Cloud Walker ~

Texture is the most enduring and ubiquitous underpinning of form . . . Certainly a calming, meditative, and appealing world for both eye and mind. ~ Lynda Lehmann ~

Nature uses only the longest threads to weave her patterns,
so that each small piece of her fabric reveals
the organization of the entire tapestry.

Richard P. Feynman

WPC – Collage

This week, share a collage with us. It can be a collage you find out in the world — a grouping of flyers on a telephone pole, patches of plants in a bed of flowers, a parking lot checkered with colorful cars — or a collage made of multiple photos. (What a great use of a tiled gallery! Nudge nudge.) If you want to indulge your inner arts-and-crafts nerd, make a paper collage and share a photo of that.

Every picture has a story to tell and sometimes a photo, like life, can appear as a collage as it takes on many layers.

When viewing this photo I felt like the man’s photo was cut out and placed in the right side of this collage. I loved how the city before him looks out-of- focus as if he is a pillar of stength and security witnessing others disappearing into the crowded city. The other two photos appear as a layered collage of people and signs.

Sometimes our photos resemble a collage. Store display windows, shelves inside of novelty stores, decorated Christmas trees, piles of books, layered mirrors, and vision boards nicely display a collage of combinations or collections of various things – one piece layered upon the next.

Nature creates its own collages with colorful rocks, moss, trees, leaves, insects, and reflections in water.

A fern and paint come together to reflect nature – Can you see a forest and beach reflected on water? Does it remind you of the natural collages above?

Bring nothing but silence
Show nothing but grace
Seek nothing but shelter
From the great human race
Take nothing but pictures
Kill nothing but time
Leave nothing but footprints
To show you came by

~ John Kay ~

Sometimes we need to slow down and inspect our lives a little closer especially when our world seems out of sync with reality. This is a perfect time to look closely at the world around you and get back in touch with nature. Remember to breathe, meditate, remain grounded in nature and connected to your true innerself.

WPC – Magic

This week, make some magic.

“Everywhere we look, complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes.” ~ Vincent Van Gogh ~

Isn’t that the truth – complex magic of nature is everywhere. Many times missed while frantically moving to keep up with our hectic schedules,  yet slowing down to notice the everyday magic brings joy and peace into our lives.

Autumn in upstate New York State

Do you take the time to notice how beautiful the trees are dressed in colorful Autumn leaves? What about after they have shed those glorious colors, do you observe the magic of their existence?

DSC_0245.jpg

Nature is filled with magic – our existence is magical. Your heart beats, your lungs breathe, you digest your food without even thinking about it. Our thoughts become creations in words, paintings, buildings. Mother nature shares her creations with us daily in a spider’s web that appear overnight, bees pollinating, the beautiful patterns and actions of butterflies and dragonflies. All this along with the wonderful sounds and smells of nature which can’t be captures in a photo.

“One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.”  William Shakespeare

May you find magic in nature to embrace on a daily basis in the shadow on the floor, the curtain dancing in the morning breeze, snow covering the earth, breathing the fresh air of the ocean breeze, floating in a kayak on a lake, jumping in a mud puddle, or seeing a beautiful reflection in water. Simple things in nature are free for all to share.

Be childlike. Below is a photo of my 13 month old grandson who helped us see magic in a lone leaf dancing across the road and in his moving shadow.
