Finding the Still Point

Finding the still point between here and there can sometimes be difficult however it is a place where we all need to be in order to feel alive. This is the point between birth and death that most people rush through only to find at the end that they didn’t take time to breath and enjoy that place in between – that still point where sanity resides.

“At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.” ~ T.S. Eliot ~

WPC – Morning

This morning I had the pleasure of waking at my son’s home to a light rain. I grabbed my camera and headed out the bedroom door into the woods and captured the beauty of nature.

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” ~ Marcus Aurelius ~

“I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.” ~  J. B. Priestley ~

Thursday morning I also woke in the morning at my son’s home and after witnessing the morning light shining through the trees grabbed my camera and explored the paths behind his home. It is like awaking into a dream world here. Feeling blessed.

“The light which puts out our eyes is darkness to us. Only that day dawns to which we are awake. There is more day to dawn. The sun is but a morning star.” ~ Henry David Thoreau ~

“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” ~ Henry David Thoreau, Walden ~

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms.” ~ Henry David Thoreau, Walden ~

Wishing you the joy of adventure and enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures. Open you eyes to the beauty around you.

Living Simply and Enjoying Life

For today, think about what truly makes you happy. Is it really hanging out in the stores in the mall spending money that you don’t have on items that you don’t need? Or, do you vibrate and feel wonderful in the garden, sitting in a swing hanging from a tree, walking down a path in a wooded area, sitting by a pond, lake, or ocean? Do you find pleasure listening to the sounds of nature, instrumentals or playing an instrument – watching children play, someone dance or dancing yourself? What is your pleasure??

DSC_0632.jpg

Give your mind, body and spirit a break from the material world and enjoy the moment. Enjoy breathing in the air, seeing others smile, laughing, smelling flowers, feeling the the breeze on your face, sitting near water, listening to bird songs, the feel of dirt or grass underfoot, swimming, walking, or sitting still.

When your are overcome by mind chatter about what you don’t have, bills, responsibilities, health, choices to be made – allow the thoughts to flow without reacting, without emotion view them as you would a movie you are watching. Remain in a peaceful place allowing the thoughts to flow through the unconscious mind. As you sit in peace, you will realize that mind chatter is a mindless waste of time and useless for the betterment of yourself or anyone else. Living simply and enjoying life does not mean being useless or lazy. It is those who understand this lifestyle that learn to live in a peaceful place no matter how chaotic the world around them seems because we live in a world of flux with good and bad occurring every moment of the day. What you see depends on how you view and react to the world around you. We all have a choice, choice wisely and change your life.

If you are unsure how to bring this peace to your life contact me and we can discuss daily small steps to take until this becomes a natural part of your experience.

Wishing you a peaceful day filled with simple pleasures.

Transforming Lives One Day at a Time

DSC_0361.jpg
If you are ready to step into that river and transform your life, make a decision that today is the day!!

Mindful living and gratitude journals are not just something that I talk about, it is a daily part of my life now. Let me share how living this way has changed my life.

Two weeks ago I participated in a challenge to post 100 things that I am grateful for. Some people said it would take too much time, they needed the whole day to think of 100 things to be grateful for. It took me around 15 minutes. It didn’t take any time to think of things to be grateful for, just the writing it down took some time. Once started I could have continued on beyond the 100 things. This is due to my waking with gratitude every morning for almost a year now.

After that challenge, I decided once again to transform my life. I facilitated a Vision Board class at the library and the women who had participated two years prior brought their Vision Boards from the previous class to show how they had accomplished their visions. My boards (I have three) have visions of at what my life will look like in six months, a year, five years. A week ago Sunday I felt a little sadness floating over and around me. At the time I wasn’t sure why I was feeling that way however by the time my evening walk ended I was feeling great, like walking through a new door.

Tuesday morning I met with two women whom I thought were meeting with me to share our experiences with the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking course. My class was in 1985 with my sister. When we first stood up to introduce ourselves to the 42 other participants I had no voice, couldn’t even share my name. My sister stood and introduced me. During the weeks of training I began to speak and was able to give one and two minutes speeches. At the end I was nominated as the most changed over the course. From shy introvert, to someone who could give speeches in front of a class. The red face, racing heart, and embarrassment were no longer a part of my experience. Speed up to 2016, sitting in the coffee shop with these two women chatting and laughing as we learned of each other unaware of what was to transpire. The one woman, was the owner of the Dale Carnegie franchise, asked if I would like to join their team. A dream since 1985 just came to fruition. Starting in September I will join the Dale Carnegie team of motivational trainers. I prefer – inspirational leaders.

During the last two weeks I was approached by a coach from the Quantum Success Coaching Academy regarding this upcoming opportunity for coaching those suffering from PTSD. I missed two of the informational calls and then last Wednesday listened in and spoke with the woman from the Academy on a Zoom conference call. By Thursday my flight was booked and a roommate found for our Seattle, WA training.

Two major changes in one week and there is no looking back.

But wait, that isn’t the end. On my vision board there is a group of people with children in the woods. They are dressed in long flowing dresses, flowers in their hair, a bon fire, tables with candles, little twinkly lights. Saturday I was invited to a Summer Solstice party. I wore my dress that had been sitting in the closet for two years awaiting such a party. While walking along the trail in the woods it felt magical. I had no idea what to expect, they just said wear a dress if you would like.

When I saw the candles on the clothed tables, little girls in dresses with flowers in their hair, white clothes hanging between the trees lit by twinkling lights, it felt like I walked into my vision. Quite a magical week.

Now as I move forward to work with those suffering from PTSD – many who feel that there is no reason to move forward in life, those stuck in their minds due to a trauma that they can’t let go of  – another door is opening. This is a dream career – to guide them along the path of mindful living, helping them find the way to living full and productive lives. Prolympian Coaching will provide methods for ending the cycle of harm starting with the individual and working with families without blame or shame. What a wonderful opportunity to guide others along their path to freedom, joy, and hope for a better future. Once they enter in the new waters there will be no looking back, they will be changed forever. If you know anyone suffering from PTSD or are a coach looking to join a team please check out this website: http://prolympiancoaching.com

Life is something to be grateful for and guiding others along their path to love, joy, and living mindfully is where I have found myself. Stepping into the flowing river of change, I shall not look back and will continue to be at peace knowing that I am transforming lives along the way.

If you are interested in private coaching sessions, please complete the form below, leave a message, or email me at spiritofdragonflies@gmail.com. Life is a river and sometimes we have to flow around or over obstacles to get to the place we wish to be. When we decide today is the day, we open the door and transformation becomes possible. As Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” That will make all the difference.

Living In-Between Past and Future

Living in-between our past and future is where we can find our peace and love of life. This moment is all we have. This post is in the past as soon as it is written down. This means I should focus in the here and now. Hold this writing in a place of love and gratitude so as I send this out to the world beautiful energy is shared with all those reading.

When writing my story, I could focus on the drama of the past or fear I had of the future but that is no longer my story. My story has been rewritten and I am forever grateful to live lovingly in-between.

IMG_5600

What story are you writing about your life?

Every moment of your life is a blank slate. You can release, redefine, and refocus the story of your life at any moment. Are you ready to release the drama and focus on what isn’t working? You can redefine your life by deciding to shift and find ways to enjoy every moment. You can refocus on the things in your life that bring joy. How you ask?

  • Decide today is the day: Say out loud, “I have decided today is the day to create a new future.”
    • Just acknowledging that you are ready prepares the way
    • Action is needed – it’s not just the saying but by deciding on what steps to take
    • Take a small step or action every day – change your morning habits, your food choices, add in a daily walk or stretching, smile more, laugh a little more, do one thing a day to help you enjoy life more
  • Stop and visualize what life you want to live
    • You know what you don’t want – we all know when we aren’t comfortable with our lives and what we don’t want any more of – switch to focus on what you do want more of and put all of your energy there
  • Create a vision board, creative future box, gratitude journal, idea journal, script of your life
    • Watch for my video of creating a vision board in a future post
    • Find a small box, decorate it and write Creative Future Box
      • place items in your box that give you joy and love
    • Pick up a journal that brings joy and write down everything you are grateful for every morning or evening, write down ideas that come to you during the day (without judging), write a script of how you want to feel about your life

Remember, life is not a destination it is a journey. Everyday is part of that journey.

One of the most important new habits you can start is to learn to appreciate wherever you are today. There is always something in your life to appreciate. If you are alive and breathing, you can have gratitude. A gift someone gave you that brings you joy – appreciation. Food on your table – appreciation. Running water and clean drinking water – appreciation. If you have your health, employment, transportation — all things to appreciate. Start small and allow your appreciation to grow.

A gift you can give to yourself is to wake every morning and before getting out of bed take a few minutes, ten if possible but there is no actual amount of time needed, and think or say out loud all the things you are appreciative of or give gratitude for. This has changed my outlook on life and the day that is to unfold before me. We can always be grateful for all of our blessings in-between. That is in-between where we were and where we are going. If you are not appreciating and giving gratitude for where you are at any given moment, then how will we ever appreciate today, tomorrow or next year. You will have to remain in-between no matter where you are, there is nothing else.

It was the times in my life when I had gratitude for my blessings – children, warm clothing, warm home, food, car, employment – that no matter how little we had I always felt love and joy. I remember once when I didn’t really like my position, or company I was working for, but enjoyed the staff that I was supervising, the location, and hours. Focusing on my children, nature, health, education, and simple pleasures like hugs, laughter, playing games, picnics allowed me to remain in a good place. There were times when I focused on what I disliked and those days were long and hard. When I received notice that I was being laid off – remember I was a single Mom of three – I thanked my employer. Without any knowledge of how we were going to survive I was truly grateful for being laid off. I knew in that moment a door had opened and we would be fine. Not sure where that knowledge came from but in my heart I knew. That door opened so that I could attend college full-time. Seven years of study at the Community College and when that door closed another opened so that I could complete my Associates degree the next year. Was it easy – no. Was it worth it – Yes!

When I share with you strategies, techniques, processes, ideas – take what appeals to you and give it a try. It can’t hurt. I’m not saying to quit your job, change relationships, relocate – unless that is what you need to do. What will work is to learn to appreciate where you are because you are always in-between. That is where life is lived. Not in the future or clinging to the past. Release the past – it no longer has any control over you. Be grateful for those loved ones who have died but don’t allow yourself to give up on your own life. Be grateful that you had the time with them and send them love. If someone from the past angered you or did something to hurt you, release them by forgiving them with love and kindness. Then love yourself by living in the here and now. Learn how to be grateful for every moment of life – sometimes we have a bad day or bad week. Truthfully, when you learn how to live in daily gratitude those bad days become bad moments that you can easily put behind you.

Everyday will not be filled with laughter however everyday can be filled with peace and love. The only person who can control your thoughts, actions, and emotions is you. You can become drama proof because drama will no longer have a place in your life once you live in the in-between with gratitude.

I hope you have decided to try some of the ideas that were shared. They have helped me and many others on our life journey, I know they can help you as well. Please let me know if you try them and what shifts you make in your own in-between journey.

Love and Light!

Is Your Life Becoming a Blur?

Are you moving too fast to enjoy life? Are you missing out on the day-to-day beauty of the world around you? This photo is a visual of what many people see as they move through their daily lives.

Reflections of life on the lake

Reflections of life on the Mirror Lake

Nature is all around yet many don’t take the time to enjoy it or to even notice their connection to it. We see it in a flash as we travel in our cars, buses, trains, planes. I see people on bicycles or running and they don’t even notice the squirrels playing or dangling on branches above them. Our children are raised to see everything in a blur as they sit in the backseat, infants facing backwards looking at the seat instead of riding in a carriage learning about the world around them. Isn’t it time that we slow down, take a breath, and enjoy the gift of life. We wouldn’t have life if it weren’t for the gifts of nature.

My mission in life is to guide people to a life of mindful living and finding their true path. A path of creativity, joy, laughter and love. It isn’t possible to have a fulfilling life when everything is a blur. You may say, that’s great but I don’t have time to slow down. People who slow down get passed over for promotions, children are overlooked when parents slow down, I need to be in competition with others so high-speed is where I live. If you end up with ill-health then living high-speed have been worthless.

Think back to the times in your life, maybe when you were a child, when you truly enjoyed your life. Maybe you sat under a tree with a good book, played with your friends until dinner time, read to your own children before bed, enjoyed swinging or lying on the beach. Are you doing anything today that brings back that feeling of those carefree days? Yes, there are bills to pay, dinner to make, a job to go to, loved ones to care for, events to attend, children to drive from place to place, etc. What would you do if you knew five to fifteen minutes a day of finding peace can change your life? What if you knew that slowing down for this short period of time daily can improve your health, mental state, relationships? Did you know that meditation can change your brain and actually make you more productive? There are many studies that have proven this.

When I am visiting patients in the hospital who are suffering from an illness I wonder if this is their body forcing them to slow down and take a break. I don’t know about you but I certainly would rather take a few minutes a day to slow down rather than go full force until my body forces me to take a break.

You are the only person who can the trajectory of your life. If you make small daily changes a state of bliss and peace will follow.

Let’s look at some ways to slow your day down to allow yourself to breath and enjoy being alive.

  • When you wake in the morning stay in bed for five minutes and think about everything you are grateful for – being alive can be the first – feel the emotion of gratitude
  • Listen to happy music while getting ready for work instead of the news – allow the energy to flow
  • When preparing dinner notice to the textures and colors of the food – be grateful for nourishment
  • While sitting at your desk stop and close your eyes for a moment and slowly breath in and out three times – be in peace
  • While driving your car every time you stop at a red light focus on your breathing – say “I breath in, I breath out” – connect with your body
  • When stuck in traffic notice the shapes and sizes of the trees, clouds, and buildings – connect with the environment
  • Take at least five minutes to meditate every day – there are many meditations available on YouTube – allow your mind and body to connect in peace
  • If you have children, sit on the floor and let them tell you a story about their day – envelope yourself and children in love and happiness
  • Take a walk around your neighborhood and notice the color of the houses, the number of trees or wildlife, pay attention to the sounds and smells – honor your daily life
  • Eat breakfast and chew your food slowly paying attention to the smell, textures, tastes – be thankful for the blessing
  • Look in the mirror and tell yourself how wonderful you are, how fortunate you are to have another day of life – love your inner self
  • Look into the eyes of those you love and let them know how precious they are to you – sense the love
  • Create a vision board for yourself or with your family – choose pictures that excite you – allow the emotion of this vision to penetrate your cells
  • Journal three pages every morning – connect with the pen and paper – share your joy
  • Sit on a swing and lay back as you enjoy the ride – feel the freedom of movement
  • Color with pencils or crayons – there are many coloring books available for adults today – connect with your  inner child
  • Turn off the television – it is a time (life) waster – enjoy your own life not Hollywood’s projection of life
  • Play board games with your children – laugh and be silly
  • Set up a puzzle on a table to work on a little each day –  slow down

Those are just a few of the many activities you can engage in to slow down, breath, and enjoy life. If you can’t meditate then the other activities will allow you to slow down your thinking mind and allow time for quiet. When my mother was alive and still able to work on puzzles she would empty the box on the dining table. Whenever anyone stopped to visit they would sit at the table with her and work on the puzzle. Sometimes we would sit together without saying a word. Other times we would listen to stories of her past or discuss problems someone was facing, then sit quiet and think about possible solutions or just support them. It was a very peaceful activity and a wonderful time spent with loved ones.

When my children were little the weekdays were sometimes a blur but weekends were spent walking in nature or playing games. We enjoyed seeing deer wandering nearby, watching squirrels and chipmunks playing with birds, rolling down the grassy hills, playing tag, lying on the ground watching clouds. If my children were still young today, I would do more of the latter and less of the blur. My weekdays would have included more quiet enjoyment and less hurrying, stressful days. This is the life I now share with my grandchildren. We slow down, laugh and act silly together. Don’t wait until you have grandchildren to slow down – start today. Do this for yourself and others will enjoy the benefits of your loving, peaceful energy.

Life is meant to be enjoyed. Learn to slow down and enjoy the little things.

Blowing in the wind

Blowing in the wind

Meditation – Guide to Your Inner Wisdom

Meditating in Nature

Meditating in Nature

Last weekend on our travel to the Catskills we sat by the waterfalls to enjoy the scenery and capture a few photos. It was a perfect spot to meditate and enjoy the peace of nature. No cars, motorcycles, or planes flying overhead. It was wonderful!

It always amazes me when traveling, or even close to home, that there is beauty all around us and some never take the time to discover what they are blessed with. Our minds race throughout the day. Many of our thoughts we would never share with others. Can you imagine what they would think if you shared every passing thought?

Many times visitors to a location will ask a local if they enjoy visiting the ocean, park, nature preserve that is within a short distance of their location and the local will share that they have never visited. Even though they have lived in the same location their entire life. In my hometown of Stillwater we are within a ten minute ride – longer if you ride a bike or walk but doable – of the Saratoga National Historical Park. There are roads which bring you to the post markers or trails that lead through the wooded areas. Many of the local people in surrounding areas have not spent any time exploring this historic site. This is a quick visit for those living in Schuylerville, Saratoga, Greenwich, Stillwater, Mechanicville and other localities. I am always surprised to speak with others at meetings or trainings who have never heard of this location or have heard but haven’t stopped to visit. While living in Long Beach, CA I had the privilege of living across the street from the Pacific Ocean. Every morning I woke to the view of the beach and would roll out of bed, throw on my sneakers and head over before work. You would think the beach would have runners, walkers and beach lovers every day – it didn’t. Some mornings I would pass one or two people, mainly dog walkers. In the evening I would be back for another walk and the same thing. On weekends, during the middle of the day the beach had many visitors in the summer months but I was surprised that those living within a very short walk didn’t enjoy the experience. This truly surprised me.

In my own backyard I am fortunate to walk into the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. There are trails throughout the area that can be reached on many roads throughout the area. On any given day, three or four cars will be parked along the road with people taking advantage while minutes away parking lots of the two large malls are packed, even on a nice sunny day such as today. Music blaring, signs throughout the mall, fast food, overpriced items all to entertain and keep the mind filled with chatter. Where do you spend your time? Does it bring long-term peace and happiness? Are there local areas to visit in your community that visitors are attracted to but you have not visited? Maybe today is the day to get out in nature and explore your community. Many of these natural areas are free to visit. How can you release your anxiety, stress, worry, and fear today? Get outside and listen to the birds singing, the frogs croaking, the trees rustling in the breeze. As I sit and type this post on my porch I hear several birds in the tree nearby singing love songs.

Our minds are like a snow globe – once shaken they can only calm if left to rest. Or, like water in a pond stirred from a turtle sliding in from along the edge or a foot entering into the mucky depth disturbing the surface under the water. You can’t see anything until the water is left at peace for a while, then water clears and you can see the bottom once again. Our minds are like this as well. When we are constantly thinking about something that brings worry, fear, or anxiety our thoughts become cluttered. It is through the practice of meditation and mindfulness that we allow our minds to be still and clear. What will arise from the depths of that quietude are creative ideas and direction after the meditation or sometimes while in the meditative states. Yes, these are thoughts as well however they come from a place of loving kindness without worry, fear, anxiety, or guilt. If you have important decisions to make and are deciding from a place of worry, fear or anxiety – STOP. Wait until your mind has time to rest and then make the decision form that place of peace and rest. It will make all the difference. Are you getting ready to send an email to a friend or coworker – STOP. Once again, wait until you are in a place of peace because the tone and result will be totally different.

When you take the time to unplug from the cell phone, radio, computer, television and sit in a state of quiet and peace your entire body is allowed to relax along with your mind. You get out of our own way and open to our inner voice that has been drowned out by all the chatter. When you take the time to enter this state of flow you get in touch with your inner wisdom. Isn’t it time you cherished yourself enough to allow your inner voice to be heard. Who knows what you may hear and how this may change your life in a positive direction.

Let’s start them young. Spend less time in the malls, at regulated sports activities, and magic parks with children and more time teaching them how to listen to their inner wisdom and make their own magic. Let them explore and find their creativity on their own. Teach them to meditate and find that inner peace to carry with them into adulthood. Imagine the lives they will live if you do.

Learning to live in the moment.

Hope you are enjoying your week! A little latte and writing material, all set for a nice break and some memories.

IMG_6417

My daughter texted tonight to share with her sister and I that the baby was in bed sleeping at 6:30 and she had her bath all ready. It would be the first since giving birth seven months ago. Just prior to getting settled into the tub she went in to check on him. I would have told her not to go in because he was sleeping. You probably guessed – he woke up.

This reminded me of when my own children were little. A bath was a luxury and a rare occasion back then. On my birthday, the two older kids would watch their little sister while I was treated to alone time in the bathroom with a candle and bubble bath while listening to Enya. Sometimes this luxury would last for ten minutes, other times less than five before the arguing began. I do remember one time it seemed so quiet that I got out to check on them only to find them all cuddled up watching a movie. I dried off and went out to watch with them. The truth was spending time with them was a luxury. Between the three part-time jobs, college, study and feeding them the moments of sitting on the couch, a walk in nature, eating dinner at the table were the best moments. One we sometimes takes those moments for granted while in the midst of trying to survive.

This leads me back to my latte and journal. A bath was a dream, not a reality during those times of single motherhood. Many days I think how nice it would be to return to those missed baths and arguing children but life moves on and children do as well. They have their own lives, just as it should be. Now I have luxurious baths, times to meditate, write, travel, explore new hobbies, nature, and meet new friends. There are adjustment periods – not just one moment – there are many over time.

When the holidays come and you find out everyone has somewhere else to be. Or when you want to get everyone together in one place after not seeing them for a couple of months and there are texts back and forth to make plans, you wonder – doesn’t anyone use the phone any longer. Then there are those times, like the death of my mother’s anniversary, when you wish your own mother was still here so you could stop by for a cup of tea. That is when you miss your own children the most.

For me this is one of the reasons meditation, practicing mindfulness, learning and sharing energy healing has become such an integral part of my life. My mother’s lifestyle is gone to the grave with her. That generation lived a totally different lifestyle than we do today. I wouldn’t be happy sitting home caring for all of my grandchildren every day. We all know that. Seeing them once in a while and talking on FaceTime make the moments we share even more important. When using FaceTime with my grandson in California I pull out toys to show him, sing songs, dance, show him the front porch and all the toys that await his next visit. Sometimes I’ll swing while talking to him and sit near a tree. It keeps his attention, he is two now, and I enjoy entertaining him.

Life is different, society has changed and it will never return to where it once was. Not better or worse – just different. So when we are together I soak them in – cuddle, hug, laugh, and do silly things. If we are together more than a week, I can tell they begin to feel an urge to return home. It isn’t that we don’t love each other, we just live in a different time and space. When they leave I pick up a book, meditate, go for a walk in nature, or create something. It is time to redefine myself once again and truthfully I am loving life. We had a wonderful time together throughout all the ups and downs we loved, laughed and learned about life. I am proud of my children and truthfully, I am proud of myself for raising independent, interesting, loving adults.

So, now I sip my coffee and write in my journal about where I will be next year and what my hopes and goals are for the future.

  • Attend my son’s gallery openings
  • Take monthly walks in nature with my youngest daughter and her baby
  • Publish and article or even a book
  • Declutter some more until I feel flow in my home
  • Sell or donate items
  • Volunteer at the hospital two days per week instead of one
  • Take a ten mile hike
  • Take a photography class
  • Take a painting class
  • Create more jewelry
  • Write one hour per day
  • Meet with the trainer once per week at the gym and exercise two times on my own
  • Walk in nature three times per week – recording sounds of nature while in the woods
  • Learn how to cook a new recipe
  • Meet new friends
  • Pay off my car
  • Save $10,000

The list may look overwhelming however it energizes me to think of all the possibilities that can manifest in a month, six months, a year. Hey, one never knows what they are capable of until the take the first step. The first leads to the second and eventually you reach your goals. Remember I was that single mom, first child at 17, who spent ten years in the Army National Guard, raised three children, made minimum wage during most of their childhood, completed college and earned a Master’s Degree, now I earn more in an hour than what I earned in a day back then. I am grateful every day for all of the blessings that have been bestowed upon me in this life. Truthfully, I have no regrets. Life is a learning lesson and I have remained open to whatever lessons came along. There are plenty more ahead and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.

If you are interested in setting goals and moving forward in your life, leave a comment below or email me at spiritofdragonflies@gmail.com. We can discuss your goals and my skills to see if we are a match. Remember, it is your story so write your list and take that first step.

WPC – Future

The past and the present might be open to interpretation, but are still constrained by the reality of what was and is. The future? It’s tremendously intangible, brimming with possibility.

This week, share an image that represents the potential of things to come.

Finding my flock/tribe to fly with

At the beginning of every year I prepare a Vision Board. One or two on a paper boards and a couple (health, career, finance, adventure) on MindMovies. You can check out Natalie Ledwell’s MindMovies site by clicking on this link:

So many people in my community speak of retirement – can’t wait until they retire. Many are in the thirties and forties. This is sad because they have years ahead of them focusing on a day in the future that may never come, or if it does, they will miss the days and years of adventures in-between. Using a mindfulness approach to the future, I focus on this moment, this day, next month, six months, and a year with a long-term goal of what my accomplishments will be over a lifetime.

Below is a Vision Board created in 2013. It was after I left my husband and his house. I had a new career, new apartment, and was beginning anew. At the time I wanted to find a rental home and live in a place similar the memory of my deceased Aunt Betsy’s home which was filled with love items/memories and sunshine.

Vision Board from 2013

Within eight months I relocated to a rental home closer to work. The home filled quickly with loved items – not all of my liking but loved by someone in the past. This happens when you try to become a minimalist – friends and family think you are lacking and share items with you. Out of love of course. When my niece came to visit she walked around the house and said “You have created your Vision Board.” Not the exact items but the energy of the board. Amazingly many of the physical realities of this home were included in my MindMovie. The house, although mine is brick-red, it is exactly like the yellow house in my movie. With the front yard, trees, garage, and swing.

This year, my current Vision Board was no longer serving me or representing the direction I want my life to flow. It was an AHA moment. My view of the future has changed – not just a little but quite a bit over the last three years. The colors that have followed me for over a decade no longer suit me, neither do the clothing style or material possessions. While reviewing some of the magazine pictures that were cut in January, it surprised me that I no longer had any feeling toward the houses, clothing, colors – mainly reds and golds. It looked like a lot of clutter. I am now drawn to sky blue, turquoise, jade, mint green, white with pops of yellow and red, although the colors of autumn do still hold a special place in my heart. A minimalist lifestyle spent in nature whenever possible is where I find myself today and in the future.

Female friends are taking on a new role in my life – finding my tribe of women to fly with is a priority. I am not sure if this is a part of the whole aging process or not, I yearn for that connection and closeness to female friends similar to my youth. I remember sitting on my friend’s front porch talking about our future and how we would still be friends in our ‘old’ age. We lost touch over three decades ago. Creating the vision board has brought me to this place – not a place of sadness but a place of knowing. Knowing exactly what and where I am heading to a life filled with love, friendship, camaraderie, laughter, creativity, and nature.

It may be that as I journeyed into my fifties there was a shift as most people share however my view on life and what is important has completely shifted. It might be a return to the adult me I visualized myself being in my teens. Sometimes I find myself in turmoil between holding on to where I have been, my idea of what this stage of my life should look like, and the direction that my new self wants to venture. Material possession have less hold over me. When I think of the home I want to live in or the car I want to drive – the actual material objects disappear. What has replaced this is a feeling/energy of what I want a home, car and other possessions to provide. When with family, friends, co-workers, interacting with people in general I want to be able to remain at peace, filled with love and compassion. My home is my sanctuary, a peaceful place to return to reenergize.

Many of my past vision boards have come to fruition and this surprises some, not me. I know what we think about and place our energy on comes to fruition. We are manifestors of our realities. As we think about our futures, we should pay more attention to our words and actions. Even if we think we don’t have everything available to us now, paying attention to our feelings about this moment will change our reality of how we think about life. By researching, networking, stepping out of our comfort zone we expand our realities and gain a better understanding of how far we can reach. Regular meditation, life coaching sessions, energy healing, and self-assessing have changed my life and preparing a Vision Board provides visual direction.
