This past weekend the computer and cell were with me but put to the side as nature called my name. It was a spontaneous decision to spend the weekend with ocean, bays, sand, walking, kayaking and being one with nature in Rhode Island. The three hour trip was well worth it.

Prior to heading out, I read that this week’s photo challenge was Beneath Your Feet. I knew my camera would come in handy at the beach but I didn’t realize how the challenge would open my eyes to new discoveries I may have missed if not mindful of what to be on the look out for. With camera in hand, I went in search and found some nice shots for this week’s challenge starting with what was beneath our feet. Enjoying the earth beneath me, shoes off, allowing my body to become grounded was very energizing.

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Beneath Your Feet.”

Being one with nature it seems only fitting to add some photos of birds enjoying their habitat and taking a look at what was beneath their feet. The wildlife was spectacular, especially while kayaking. Birds pose nicely for photos if you slowly glide along the water causing little noise. They appear to walk on the water beneath their feet as you can see from the photo below.

It was amazing to sit back and watch the show – better than any television show. The sounds of the birds singing and calling out to one another. The mother protecting her large nest as she flew around and around the small island, dive bombing to the water in warning not to get any closer. Then she would perch on the limb outside of the nesting area to keep watch. In the grassy area, dragonflies darted past too quick for my camera to capture. The birds were easier models.

Hope you enjoyed the photos as much as I enjoyed snapping them. When we slow down, we see the world around us with new eyes and ears. Living mindfully in nature one day at a time.

Hands on Relationship With Your Food

This is one of my favorite times of the year, strawberry picking season. A time to have a hands on relationship with the food that I will be eating now and over the winter months.

Red and ripe - ready for picking

Red and ripe – ready for picking

If you haven’t had the opportunity please give picking your own food a try. If you are blessed with a little land, plant a garden or a small potted garden on your windowsill.

Whether picking strawberries in June, blueberries in July, raspberries in Aug, or apples in Sept/October it can be a pleasant experience. Bring some children, family or friends and make a day of it as you build memories. As a child, my sisters and I would go picking with my mother and her sister, Aunt Mimi. On my first venture into the field, I couldn’t understood why they wanted to sit on the ground in the blazing sun picking strawberries. It seemed going to the air-conditioned grocery store was much easier. But, when we returned home to clean the berries and prepare strawberry shortcake for Dad, that’s when it became fun!

Mom sharing time with her daughter

Now I cherish the memories of those days in the fields, sharing time with the women in my life. When I saw the young mother and her small child it brought back memories of quiet talks about life, food and time spent sharing a day filled with love. The experience was priceless.

What I have discovered in adulthood is that picking fruit is very meditative. When I pick with my sister we start off with some chatter about past experiences, family, changes in relationships over time and other non-important banter.

My sister at happily finding her treasure

My sister happily finding her treasure

After around fifteen minutes we begin to flow into our own rhythm and spread out in different directions. She in deep thought and I with camera in hand take in the surroundings, children popping one strawberry in their mouth as they place one in the basket. There were sibling groups huddled together in deep conversation as they picked and whole families enjoying time together.

Then, I fell into a methodical rhythm thinking loving thoughts with every berry placed in the tray.

Memories of sharing fruit with my children, grandchildren and guests began to whirl in my mind making me smile. Then came thoughts of healthy lunches of spinach salad with strawberries, blueberries, feta cheese topped with pecans and a little balsamic vinaigrette blend.

Some people come to pick one quart basket but not us, we fill an entire tray and we try to return two times per fruit season to pick enough to freeze and take us through the winter. This past week I opened the last bag of frozen strawberries, just in time for the new bags to replace last year’s fruit. There are still a couple of bags of frozen blueberries. That is because last year I picked so many the freezer was filled even after sharing.

So the benefits of picking your own: meditative, relaxing, you know what you are purchasing and whether they have been sprayed, supporting local farmers and their families, pick with thoughts of love so each piece is filled with loving energy, pick enough to last the entire year, and sharing a special time with others. There’s nothing better than going to the freezer in the middle of winter to grab a bag of fresh fruit.

Having a garden filled with fresh vegetables is another blessing that I have missed the last three years. Although I don’t have my own garden, I do purchase at the local farmer markets and freeze vegetables too. Waiting for the zucchini to make a delicious zucchini parmesan.

For now, I shall enjoy the gift of my labor with a strawberry shortcake and remember times shared with my mother and father on this Father’s Day. Bon appetit!

If you have the opportunity to connect with your food through picking fruits or vegetables give it try. If you live in an area of the world where you are blessed with other connections to food please share. I would love to hear of your blessings.

Snowy Day Decluttering

What to do on a snowy windy day? Or rainy day? Well if you read any FaceBook posts it would seem to complain is the thing to do. Let’s not indulge those whose only means of entertainment and activity is to complain because it is too cold to drive to the mall. Let’s move our own lives in a different direction. One of hope, love, laughter, and enjoyment no matter what is occurring in our environment. This includes all the ebbs and flows in life.

Last night I began the act of cleaning and decluttering. If you read earlier posts you know that I did this in the summer and most people visiting would think I really don’t have too much clutter. Compared with some family members, I don’t have any clutter. However, yesterday after my iMovie class at Apple and speaking to the supervisor about a part-time position, I began to think about how to reduce time spent cleaning my home so I could be free to work my full-time position and a part-time position while writing my book, coaching, and motivating others. All of which are a priority in my life. Working at Apple would be an excellent opportunity to learn and enhance my computer skills – cleaning and holding onto items that are no longer useful in my new life are not. So releasing once again was a necessity.

I have hundreds of books sorted throughout the house by category. Women Studies are in the antique barrister bookcase in the living room. All books on neurology and brain – behavior are located on a shelf near the couch in the living room along with teaming and business books. Feng Shui, create books, and novels are on the bookshelf in the dining room. The dining room is also home to a small shelf of children’s books. On the small shelf in the hallway is a small collection of motivational books such as Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. This is strategically located so anyone heading to the bedrooms can grab something that might motivate them. In my office I have a very large shelf that is home to Memoirs, Law of Attraction, Writing, and Spiritual books along with some favorite items like my drum, family photos, and office supply crate. There is also an antique barrister bookshelf that has been home to all of my older philosophical books to include Ayn Rand, Lin Yutang, Jung and others. There is also one bookshelf that belonged to my mother which is home to my journals from over the last two decades. Some of those journals may start in January 1 of one year then in the center may begin with August three years later. There is no rhyme or reason. These I continue to hold on to for my writing material.

This brings me to decluttering. I have a few books on decluttering. Prior to beginning the process I sat with the newest in my collection and discovered a new thought on decluttering. In the past I have read books on decluttering by removing one item a day or donating an item if a new one is purchased. The latter is the way I try to keep a handle on my material possessions. I don’t know about you but it can be difficult to let go of some sentimental items even when they have long worn out their welcome. They sit looking at us day after day and we wonder why we keep them. Then we put it off for another day. Eventually they build up over time – people die and we take something that belonged to them, we can’t allow anything that belonged to our mother, father, aunt, uncle, friend to be passed to a stranger. Or remnants of a former relationship remain in a drawer, box in the attic, in the jewelry box. You know what you have hidden. Here are some of the books I have on decluttering.

Each one spoke to me when I purchased and read them. The book on De-Clutter, De-Stress Your Life was actually from a class I went to on releasing stress from your life. It was a very helpful class. The more stuff we have the more we have to care for – to dust – to find a place for – more upkeep – less time for doing what we want to do. We use our stuff as an excuse not to accomplish our goals. If we have to clean then we can’t write that novel or paint that picture or take that hike. If we don’t clean out that cabinet of food that is not healthy the better chance we will reach in and grab something unhealthy on those stressful days. The less we own the freer we are – that is a reality.

The newest book, the life-changing magic of tidying up – the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing by Marie Kondo, shares in the value of making one clean swoop and removing it all – removing it from your home immediately. The benefit is a renewed life. A fresh start. A release from what is holding you back.

So I will share what she feels about decluttering books. She said take them all off the shelf – ALL of them. This is a difficult task. As I shared there are all categorized by topic and author. Taking all the books off the shelf and placing them together on the floor. They are no longer lying dormant on the shelf. Then pick up each book and ask yourself “Does this spark joy?”

If too many like myself – she says to divide them by category. General (books you read for pleasure) – Practical (references, cookbooks), Visual (photograph collections), Magazines. Oh did I mention I have a collection of Victoria magazines from the 1990s – 2000 when they went out of business. Ms Kondo shares that you are not to start reading the book – this is what I end up doing. You can only touch it and ask yourself if you need it or not. We have to stop and think about the purpose the books serve. Now mind you, I felt very good about releasing the 60+ books sitting in a pile on the dining room floor. Today, on this cold February day, I shall go back through the books and whereto autographed or not only keep those that inspire me. There is always the library which can house the books and I can go there and borrow them when needed. After all my niece is a librarian and capable of finding books I am interested in reading.

Well I have to go now to place the remaining couple of hundred books on the floor to see which will remain in my hall of fame book collection. It is at once frightening and invigorating – almost freeing.

I’ll let you know how I it turns out. After the books, it will be time to tackle the papers sitting in the files from my writing classes and internships/fellowships from a decade ago.

What do you do when you are inside on those rainy, snowy, windy days?

Hope this helped. Decluttering results in releasing material belongings and freeing you which can reduce stress and improve health. Give it a try!!

Love and Light,
Sandy

Magic in Nature

A week ago Monday and again on Sunday a friend bundled up and took a walk in the nature preserve behind my home. We placed my new Nikon camera in the backpack and headed out the back door. Each day brought its own beauty. One one occasion we went out after there was a freeze and on the other it had warmed and their was some snow on the ground.

After walking through the woods for a while we decided to pull out the camera to see if we could capture the magic of the droplets that looked like little crystal lights on the limbs.

Droplets delicately hanging from the thin limbs

It was breathtaking and very fragile. If we moved too quickly the droplets fell to the ground. My friend sneezed and several fell as I was taking a picture. We laughed and began to walk a little more cautiously. Below is a close up of one of the droplets.

Look closely and you can see the reflection of a pine tree

As we moved on toward the pond I wanted to capture the beautiful colors of the reddish tree with greenish-white moss but discovered a little surprise after the photo was taken.

Initials found in a tree

It wasn’t until I went to check the photo that I notices the initials. There was a thin layer of ice on the pond and I became fascinated by the leaves floating in the water just under the ice. They resembled a gel candle with flowers suspended within.

Fallen leaves caught within the ice

I must have taken ten photos of the leaves in the water. The picture below is one that I felt especially connected with. Some of the leaves are frozen within the pond, while a couple are suspended in between freezing and free, and two others are on top of the water but appear to have their underside caught in a thin top layer. You can see the water froze while in movement.

Leaves in various stages of freezing

In the photo below you can see even more closely that moment in time was captured when it became frozen. There is a little wave in the water that froze while in movement. It seems as if the water and leaves where enjoying the flow when the icy air capture them in the moment.

Love this! A moment captured in time.

Love this! A moment captured in time.

Then while sitting and enjoying the view one straggler leaf floated along on top of the ice as if skating.

The lonely skating leaf

It was a beautiful experience and every time I hike out in back there is a new discovery. This time it was a wooden bridge.

Looks like it is slanted but it is really due to the way the boards are laid.

There is a brook that runs through the preserve as well as a couple of ponds. It is a treasure right behind my home. I feel so blessed. This is me touching a tree to soak up the energy of Mother Earth. As you can see from this photo the ice was no longer clear and smooth. It had frozen, melted a bit and after the snow froze again. It will no longer have the clear smooth surface.

Soaking up the energy of Mother Earth through the tree

What I have discovered while being in nature with a camera in hand is that I slow down and begin to focus on the close up as well as the whole of the forest. It is in the close up view that we can see a whole world that most people miss in their busy lives. If we could all learn to take time to slow down and enjoy the small things we may just learn to live with less and enjoy life more.

Sandy

Taking Small Steps to Reach Goals in 2015

This is how I feel about 2015!!

Feeling Great!!

Feeling Great!!

So excited about the steps I have taken thus far to attract my dreams in 2015. Let me share a little with you:

  • Joined the gym right down the road from my house, which is also on my way home
  • Walked four out of five days
  • Cleared the holiday junk food out of the cabinets and refrigerator
  • Purchased healthy food at the grocery store and have been preparing healthy meals and smoothies
  • Bring my own lunch, bottle of water, and coffee/tea to work with me
  • Prepared a budget for 2015 with a goal to pay off some debt – already paid off a department store charge card
  • Cleaned up the holiday decorations and all of the rooms in my home – now I have a writing area plus a create area so I have a place to set up my sewing machine
  • Meditated four times in the past five days
  • Had one person contact me out of the blue today to hire me as her life coach – we start this Sunday!
  • Prepared my Vision Board with my niece
  • Reached out to Catholic Charities program to volunteer as a life coach for at-risk youth
  • Practiced taking pictures on my new camera while walking in the preserve behind my home
  • Tonight I finished my DVD of old movies with iMemories and ordered one for myself and one for each of my three children.

Phew! It is only January 5th and I have been very busy taking the steps toward reaching my goals. Very excited about my upcoming writing course with UCLA that starts in two weeks and my Intermediary Therapeutic Touch classes that start in March.

You can really accomplish quite a bit working a full-time if you don’t sit in front of the television or constantly text. I love technology but use it to my advantage to reach my goals. Stopping to take in a movie, especially a comedy can be very good for you. Reading a book instead of sitting in front of the television can be beneficial as well. I had the cable turned off over a year ago and have never missed it. Just think how much money is saved when the cable is cancelled – enough for you to take a class, join a gym, or maybe take a mini-vacation. Just something to think about. What about spending more time with your children or friends playing games, hiking, dancing. The list is never ending.

What are your plans for 2015? If you don’t have a plan, haven’t written down what you want to attract, or are unsure please contact me and let’s see if I can provide guidance to help you reach your goals.

Love and Light,

Sandy

Change Your Life

What steps will you take in 2015 to change your life?

What steps will you take in 2015 to change your life?

What steps can you take in 2015 to make the changes you want to see in your life? Now is the time of year to prepare for next year. I am sure you have heard the expression, write it down make it happen. If you can sit down this weekend and take time to review your life, where you are stagnated or would like to continue to see improvement then write down what you would like life to look like. Include financial, relationship, career, family, home, community, spiritual and any other areas that you would like to include. I too will be journaling in my new journal to write down what I want life to be in 2015. I will also be reviewing this past years journals and the ending journal from 2013. This is the year to improve and expand our lives in the direction of our choice.

Make it Happen

Make it Happen

I would love to hear if you follow through with writing it down and following up with how you are making out through the year. In turn, I will share my own. Looking forward to a successful, healthy, happy and loving New Year.

Love and Light,
Sandy

Letting Go of Fear

What is holding you back?

What is holding you back?

Fear is a controlling factor for many of us. Procrastination and blaming others makes it easier than taking responsibility for ourselves. I am sure you all know people who are stuck in this mindset. I spent years worrying, complaining, procrastinating, and blaming life circumstances on others when in reality it was my own fears and actions that held me back. Today I work a little each day on writing because that was a dream from my early years. Writing and drawing were my dream. Last week I entered my first magazine contest. Whether I win or not, I feel successful because I actually released a short story out to the public. This is so far from where I was a two years ago. I also enrolled in another UCLA writing class with the goal of ending the class with a complete story ready for publication. Today while sitting at the garage waiting for my car I am utilizing the time to research so I can use the time wisely and productively while enjoying myself. Your creative juices can flow in any situation, even if just in your mind because that is where everything starts anyway.

What can you do today that will bring you one step closer to your dreams? Share it with the Universe and watch it come to fruition.

Love and Light!!

Feeling Grateful

Feeling grateful!!

Feeling grateful!!

The more you can find to be grateful for, the more you will attract into your life. When we can focus on what we have to be grateful for today the more we will see around us. Just waking in the morning is a blessing because many will not. Being able to take a breath, feed ourselves, walk, see, feel, sense, hear are all blessings that not everyone has the benefit of in their lives. If you have a bed to sleep in at night, a pillow, roof over your head be thankful. If you have a job, electricity, heat, air conditioning, running water, a toilet, floor be thankful. We can go on and on with the everyday blessings. It is all in what you focus on whether you will feel gratitude in your life.

When I wake in the morning I lie with my eyes shut and feel the comfort of the sheets on my body and the pillow under my head. Then I open my eyes and notice the sunlight penetrating the curtains. I see the vanity my daughter is storing at my home and the necklace with my grandchild’s photo and continue around the room. Most of my items are either from a second hand store, hand me downs with some new items mixed in. That is the way I like it. When I get out of bed I like to feel the cool floor under my feet. Then I continue into the dining room and look out the window at the trees – in the spring and summer the birds playing, in the fall the colorful leaves and in the winter I love to look out at the snow. Then I turn on the tea kettle and some happy music. When taking my shower I stand and visualize the water flowing over me taking away any negativity I may be harboring. I visualize this negative energy swirling down the drain to be recycled by the earth returning as positive energy. I make my eggs and prepare a lunch of spinach salad. I pour water and lemon juice in my glass bottle and look around my home as I leave thankful for all of the blessings that are in my life. There are days when a sad cloud is hovering but I do not indulge in a cold, loss of a loved one, car repairs, traffic or other things that could take me down. My focus is on blessings and the day becomes filled with more. What can you focus on to improve the outlook of your life?

Love and Light,
Sandy
